Agent memory
Agent memory is information an agent retains across steps or sessions, beyond what fits in a single prompt, so earlier context can inform later decisions.
Prerequisite: Agent loop
What matters
Without memory, an agent would treat every step as if starting from nothing, unable to recall earlier findings, user preferences, or prior mistakes within the same task.
Example
An agent with memory can recall that a user already rejected one restaurant suggestion earlier in the conversation and avoid suggesting it again.
Common misconception
Agent memory is not the same as a larger context window; memory is typically stored and retrieved deliberately, rather than simply kept in the live prompt.
Recall question
What problem does agent memory solve that a single prompt alone cannot?
