AI regulation

AI regulation is legally binding rules, created by a government or governing body, that constrain how certain AI systems may be built, deployed, or used.

What matters

Unlike voluntary standards or internal policies, regulation carries legal consequences for non-compliance, which changes how organizations must treat certain requirements.

Example

A regulation might legally require that a system used for a high-stakes decision, like credit approval, provide an explanation to an affected applicant.

Common misconception

AI regulation is not the same everywhere; requirements can differ significantly between jurisdictions, and a system compliant in one region may not be in another.

Recall question

What distinguishes a legal regulation from a voluntary internal policy?
