Deepfake

A deepfake is synthetic media, often video or audio, generated to convincingly depict a real person saying or doing something they did not actually say or do.

Prerequisite: Digital watermark

What matters

The risk lies specifically in the combination of realism and misrepresentation of a real identifiable person, which is what distinguishes harmful deepfakes from ordinary generated content.

Example

A fabricated video showing a public figure appearing to say something they never actually said is a deepfake, regardless of how it was technically produced.

Common misconception

Not all AI-generated media is a deepfake; the term specifically applies to realistic synthetic content depicting a real, identifiable person doing or saying something false.
