IP address

An IP address is a numeric identifier assigned to a device on a network, used to route data to and from that specific device.

Prerequisite: Domain Name System

What matters

Every request on the internet is ultimately routed using IP addresses; domain names exist only as a human-friendly layer on top of this numeric addressing.

Example

A web server might have the IP address 93.184.216.34, which is what DNS resolves 'example.com' to behind the scenes.

Common misconception

A device's IP address is not always permanent; many devices are assigned a different address each time they connect to a network.

Recall question

What is the actual purpose of an IP address on a network?
