Machine learning
Machine learning is a branch of AI where a system improves its performance on a task by learning patterns from example data, rather than by explicit programming.
Prerequisite: Artificial intelligence
What matters
Instead of a person writing rules, an algorithm searches for statistical patterns in training examples and encodes them as adjustable parameters. The resulting model can then make predictions on new, unseen data.
Example
A model trained on thousands of past house sales can learn the relationship between square footage, location and price well enough to estimate the price of a new listing.
Common misconception
Machine learning does not require deep learning or neural networks; simple statistical models like linear regression are also machine learning.
Recall question
What does a machine learning algorithm search for in training data?
