Server-side rendering

Server-side rendering generates a page's HTML on the server for each request, so the browser receives a fully formed page rather than building it entirely client-side.

Prerequisite: Server Component

What matters

This can improve how quickly a page first appears and how well it's understood by tools that don't run JavaScript, compared to rendering everything only in the browser.

Example

A product page that fetches the latest price from a database on every request and renders full HTML before sending it uses server-side rendering.

Common misconception

Server-side rendering does not mean the page has no client-side JavaScript at all; a page can still become interactive after the server-rendered HTML loads.

Recall question

What does the browser receive first with server-side rendering, compared to client-only rendering?
