Service-level objective

A service-level objective is a target value set for a service-level indicator, such as '99.9% of requests succeed', that a team aims to meet.

Prerequisite: Service-level indicator

What matters

Setting an explicit objective turns a vague goal like 'be reliable' into a specific, measurable target that can be tracked, alerted on, and used to guide real trade-off decisions.

Example

A team might set the objective '99.9% of requests complete successfully each month', giving them a concrete target to measure their actual performance against.

Common misconception

A service-level objective set at 100% is not typically a realistic or even desirable goal; most teams intentionally allow some acceptable margin for occasional failures.

Recall question

Why might a team deliberately set an objective below 100% rather than aiming for perfection?
