Transparency
Transparency is making meaningful information available about how a system works and makes decisions, to whoever needs it to trust or evaluate the system.
What matters
What counts as meaningful transparency differs by audience: a regulator, an affected user, and an engineer each need different kinds and depths of information.
Example
Publishing that a loan model uses income and credit history, without necessarily revealing its full internal logic, can still count as meaningful transparency for applicants.
Common misconception
Transparency does not require revealing a system's complete internal code or proprietary details; it requires providing information meaningful to the audience that needs it.
Recall question
Why might transparency look different for a regulator than for an affected user?
