Transport Layer Security
Transport Layer Security is a protocol that encrypts data sent between a client and a server, so it can't be read or altered by anyone intercepting the connection.
Prerequisite: HTTP request
What matters
Without it, anything sent over a network, including passwords and personal data, could be read in plain text by anyone able to intercept the traffic in between.
Example
A website served over HTTPS uses Transport Layer Security to encrypt everything exchanged between a visitor's browser and the server.
Common misconception
Transport Layer Security does not protect data once it's stored on the server; it only protects data specifically while it's in transit across the network.
Recall question
What specifically does Transport Layer Security protect, and what does it not cover?
