AI washing

AI washing is marketing a product as 'AI-powered' when it uses little or no actual learned-model behavior, to make it sound more advanced than it is.

What matters

Recognizing AI washing helps you evaluate a product on what it actually does rather than the label attached to it, since the term 'AI' carries no guarantee of any particular technique.

Example

A scheduling app that only follows a handful of hard-coded if-then rules but is marketed as 'AI-driven scheduling' is a case of AI washing.

Common misconception

A product calling itself 'AI' is not proof that it uses machine learning; the term has no legal or technical definition it must meet.

Recall question

What should you check before trusting a product's 'AI-powered' claim?
