Backend
The backend is the part of an application that runs on a server, handling business logic, data storage, and requests that the frontend can't safely or capably handle itself.
Prerequisite: Frontend
What matters
Because it runs on infrastructure the developer controls, the backend is where sensitive operations, like checking a password or charging a payment, must be enforced.
Example
Verifying a submitted password against a stored hash happens on the backend, never trusting a check performed only in the browser.
Common misconception
The backend is not just 'the database'; it includes all the server-side application logic that decides what to do with data, not only where it's stored.
Recall question
Why must sensitive checks, like password verification, happen on the backend?
