Consent

Consent is a person's informed, freely given agreement to a specific use of their personal data, understood clearly enough to be a real choice.

Prerequisite: Purpose limitation

What matters

For consent to be meaningful, a person needs to genuinely understand what they're agreeing to and have a real ability to decline, not just click through an unread notice.

Example

Clearly explaining that location data will be shared with a named partner, and letting the user decline without losing core functionality, reflects meaningful consent.

Common misconception

A long, unread terms-of-service agreement being technically clicked through does not necessarily reflect meaningful, informed consent to every specific use it describes.

Recall question

What two conditions make consent to a specific data use meaningful?
