Contestability
Contestability is a system being designed so an affected person can challenge or question a decision made about them, rather than the decision being final and unexplained.
Prerequisite: Accountability
What matters
Without a way to contest a decision, an error made about a specific person, like a wrongly denied loan, may have no path to correction at all.
Example
A system that lets a denied applicant request a human review of their case, rather than only receiving an automated rejection, supports contestability.
Common misconception
Contestability is not simply providing a generic feedback form; it means a real path exists to actually challenge and potentially reverse a specific decision.
Recall question
What can happen to a wrongly made decision in a system with no contestability path?
