Remedy
A remedy is the corrective action taken when a system has caused harm, such as reversing a wrong decision or compensating someone affected.
Prerequisite: Contestability
What matters
Recognizing a mistake without providing any remedy leaves the affected person no better off, so a working remedy process is what actually closes the loop on accountability.
Example
Correcting a wrongly denied loan application and backdating any lost benefit is a remedy, going beyond simply acknowledging the error occurred.
Common misconception
A remedy is not the same as an apology or acknowledgment alone; it specifically involves a concrete corrective action for the person actually affected.
Recall question
Why is acknowledging a mistake alone not the same as providing a remedy?
