HTML element

An HTML element is a single structural unit of a webpage, defined by a tag, that tells the browser what kind of content it contains, such as a paragraph or a link.

What matters

The browser uses each element's tag to decide how to lay it out and behave by default, before any custom styling or scripting is applied.

Example

A `<p>` element tells the browser to treat its content as a paragraph, while an `<a>` element tells it the content is a clickable link.

Common misconception

An HTML element's tag name is not just a label for humans; the browser uses it to determine real default behavior and layout.

Recall question

What does the browser use an HTML element's tag for?
