HTTP status code

An HTTP status code is a three-digit number in an HTTP response that indicates whether a request succeeded, failed, or requires further action.

Prerequisite: HTTP method

What matters

Status code ranges have broad conventional meanings, like 2xx for success and 4xx for a client error, which lets client code react appropriately without parsing the whole response body.

Example

A 404 status code tells the client the requested resource wasn't found, while a 500 indicates the server itself encountered an error.

Common misconception

A response with a 200 status code is not automatically free of application-level errors; the code covers the HTTP layer, not necessarily whether the returned data is correct.

Recall question

What does a status code in the 4xx range generally indicate?
