Human-in-the-loop
Human-in-the-loop describes a system where a person must actively review and approve a decision before it takes effect, rather than the system acting on its own.
Prerequisite: Human oversight
What matters
This design specifically prevents an automated decision from taking effect without direct human review first, at the cost of slower processing than fully automated action.
Example
A content moderation system that requires a human reviewer to confirm before a post is actually removed is human-in-the-loop.
Common misconception
Human-in-the-loop does not just mean a person is somewhere involved in the system; it specifically means their approval is required before the action actually happens.
Recall question
What must happen before a decision takes effect in a human-in-the-loop system?
