Human oversight
Human oversight is a person retaining meaningful ability to review, question, or override an automated system's decisions, rather than the system operating entirely unchecked.
Prerequisite: Interpretability
What matters
Oversight is only meaningful if the person has enough time, information, and authority to actually intervene, not merely a formal sign-off role with no real power to act.
Example
A radiologist reviewing and being able to overrule an AI's flagged diagnosis, rather than automatically accepting it, reflects meaningful human oversight.
Common misconception
Human oversight is not satisfied by a person simply clicking 'approve' on every automated decision without genuinely being able to evaluate or challenge it.
