ML problem formulation
ML problem formulation is turning a business or research question into a precise prediction task, with a defined input, output, and success measure.
What matters
A poorly formulated problem dooms a project before any modeling starts; deciding exactly what to predict and how to measure success shapes every later decision about data and evaluation.
Example
'Reduce customer churn' becomes formulated as 'predict, for each customer, the probability they cancel within 30 days, evaluated by precision at the top 10%.'
Common misconception
Problem formulation is not a quick first step to rush through; unclear formulation is one of the most common reasons ML projects fail in practice.
Recall question
Why can a vague business goal doom an ML project before modeling even begins?
