Narrow AI

Narrow AI describes a system built and trained to perform one specific task well, such as translation or image classification, with no ability to generalize beyond it.

Prerequisite: Artificial intelligence

What matters

Almost every AI system in production today is narrow: a chess engine cannot drive a car, and a translation model cannot diagnose an illness, even though each performs its own task at a high level.

Example

A model that only classifies whether an X-ray shows a fracture is narrow AI, however accurate it is, because it cannot perform any other task.

Common misconception

Narrow AI is not a lesser or outdated category; it is the category that includes essentially all deployed AI systems today.

Recall question

Why can a highly accurate narrow AI system still not perform an unrelated task?
