Generative AI
Generative AI refers to models that produce new content, such as text, images or audio, rather than only classifying or scoring existing input.
Prerequisite: Machine learning
What matters
These models learn the statistical structure of their training data well enough to sample new, plausible examples from it. That is why the same prompt can produce different outputs each time.
Example
Asking an image-generation model for 'a cat wearing a hat' produces a newly synthesized image, not a retrieved photo from its training set.
Common misconception
Generative AI does not retrieve or copy stored files when it responds; it synthesizes new output based on learned patterns.
Recall question
Why can the exact same prompt to a generative model produce two different outputs?
