Supervised learning
Supervised learning trains a model on examples that each include a known correct label, so the model learns to predict that label for new examples.
Prerequisite: Label
What matters
Because every training example has a known answer, the model can be directly scored against it during training, which is what makes tasks like classification and regression measurable.
Example
Training a model to predict house prices from past sales, where every past sale's actual price is known, is supervised learning.
Common misconception
Supervised learning does not require a human labeling every example by hand at training time; labels can also come from historical records or automated logging.
Recall question
What must every training example include for a task to count as supervised learning?
