Web browser

A web browser is a program that sends HTTP requests, receives responses, and renders the returned HTML, CSS, and JavaScript into an interactive page.

Prerequisite: HTTP response

What matters

Because different browsers can interpret code slightly differently, understanding that the browser is doing active rendering work explains why cross-browser testing matters.

Example

A browser requests a page's HTML, then separately requests the CSS and JavaScript files it references, assembling all three into what you see and interact with.

Common misconception

A web browser does not just display raw HTML text; it actively parses, lays out, and executes code to build the interactive page you see.

Recall question

What three types of files does a browser typically combine to render a page?
