Output metric
An output metric measures what a system directly produces, like predictions made or content generated, rather than the effect those outputs actually have.
Prerequisite: Real-world outcome
What matters
Output metrics are easy to measure directly from the system itself, but they can look strong even while the real-world effect of those outputs is poor or harmful.
Example
'Number of recommendations served' is an output metric, distinct from whether those recommendations actually improved anyone's experience or decisions.
Common misconception
A high output metric does not by itself indicate a system is providing real value; it measures activity, not necessarily beneficial effect.
Recall question
Why doesn't a strong output metric alone prove a system is having a good effect?
